Medellin The second largest city in Colombia and a favorite among digital nomads, the city is located in the Abra Valley and has a pleasant climate all year round, so it is known as the “City of Eternal Spring”.
I spent a lot of time in Medellin. While the city had a troubled past, today it is a vibrant, innovative metropolis. I would go back in a heartbeat. (Be sure to take at least one salsa class while you’re here!) The city continues to grow and improve year after year.
Still, there are some safety issues here, so it’s important to choose the right hotel and area. To make sure your trip is safe and comfortable, here’s my list of the best hotels in Medellin:
1. Nomada Oligen Hotel
This 4-star hotel is located in El Poblado, a centrally located neighborhood full of restaurants, bars, clubs, cafes and shops. While there’s plenty to do in the area, save some time to lounge in the hot tub on the tree-lined hotel rooftop while sipping a cocktail and taking in the stunning views of the city (a great way to end a busy day of exploring). You can also start your day here, as free breakfast is served on the rooftop, too.
The rooms are comfortable and spacious, with a cool design, exposed brick walls and beams, hardwood floors and soft lighting. All rooms have a desk, flat-screen TV and minibar. Deluxe rooms have a kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, stove and coffee machine. The bathrooms have tiled walls and floors, a powerful shower (which I always love), and free toiletries. This is my most recommended hotel in the city because it really is great value for money. The location is also very good.
2. Click-click
This 5-star design hotel is one of the coolest places to stay in El Poblado. It has an industrial-chic-meets-nature vibe, with sleek architecture and plants everywhere. I loved that the included breakfast was served in the spacious atrium, which was full of light and greenery. There’s also a rooftop pool with its own bar that serves delicious cocktails, and spa/massage services. If you need anything, just contact the front desk via WhatsApp, which I found really handy (especially when you’re jet-lagged or tired from sightseeing).
All rooms have a desk, flat-screen TV and safe, but I particularly liked the free minibar, which was stocked with healthy snacks from local Colombian producers. The stylish bathroom had a dark and moody feel (perhaps a little too dark in my opinion), but the walk-in shower with a rainfall shower head was great. If you want the most stylish hotel in Colombia Medellin’s best neighborhoodsthat’s it!
3. Ibis Medellin
This 3-star hotel is located in the artsy Ciudad del Rio neighborhood, not far from the Medellin Museum of Modern Art. It’s also less than a block from the Mercado del Río, the city’s largest food market. The hotel is bright and airy, and offers a buffet breakfast with plenty of fresh local fruit and baked goods. I like that the standard check-out time is 12 noon, so you don’t have to worry about leaving in a rush in the morning (perfect if you’ve been out enjoying the city’s wild nightlife).
I will say that I found the rooms a little too basic, but they did include the usual mid-level amenities like a desk, flat-screen TV, and wardrobe with safe. The bathroom was a good size, though, with a large sink (handy for organizing things), and complimentary toiletries. A good choice for someone who wants a pleasant (but not luxurious) stay in an interesting part of the city.
4. Setes Hotel
Located in the laid-back Patio Bonito, this hotel is popular with Medellin’s expat and digital nomad communities and is full of trendy restaurants and bars. The hotel has a rooftop pool and jacuzzi, a lobby reading room, a small fitness center, and laundry facilities. The breakfast buffet is delicious and includes a variety of sweet breads and pastries, fresh juices, yogurt, and eggs cooked to order.
Rooms range from spacious deluxe rooms to apartments, all of which have kitchens with stoves, fridges, dishwashers, microwaves, coffee makers and mini bars. All have a simple yet cosy feel, with beautiful wooden floors, wall art by local Colombian artists, desks and flat-screen TVs. Apartments also have their own terraces. Bathrooms are good-sized and come with free toiletries and powerful rainfall showerheads. Given its location and the kitchen facilities in each room, Sites is perfect for mid-range travelers staying in Medellin for a longer period of time.
5. World Garden
If you’re looking for a hotel that’s a little smaller than the many high-rises, Patio del Mundo is a boutique hotel with only 13 rooms. There’s always free coffee and fresh juice in the lobby, and the owner and staff are very friendly and helpful. I love their tropical garden and patio, which has hammocks, lounge chairs, and a hot tub on the deck. I also love starting the day with the free breakfast buffet, which includes fresh fruit, juice, croissants, pancakes, and fresh eggs. Keep an eye out for hummingbirds buzzing around while you eat!
Each room is inspired by a different part of the world (a pretty clever concept). Brazil, Provence, India, and Cuba are just a few examples of the different rooms. Each room has its own unique character; some have a private terrace, while others have a deep soaking tub. All rooms have a flat-screen TV and a minibar, and most also have a desk. The bathrooms come with free toiletries and a large tiled walk-in shower. The hotel focuses on health and wellness, so you can also treat yourself to a massage or Reiki treatment. Overall, this hotel feels like a little oasis in the heart of the city.
Medellin It has it all: great weather, tons of museums, walking tours, lush parks, colorful street art, mouth-watering food tours and markets, and incredible nightlife. I loved my time here and would love to stay here again for a few weeks. I’m sure you will love it too. Just make sure to choose your accommodation from the list above. Do so and you’ll have a safe, comfortable stay!
