Disney Cruise Line’s newest destination in the Bahamas, Lighthouse Point Lookout Caye, has officially been completed.
Lookout Cay is located at the southern tip of Eleuthera Island, which is east of Nassau and south of Castaway Cay, Disney’s other private destination in the Bahamas.
Disney executives and cast members, community members and Bahamian officials gathered on Lookout Island Thursday to celebrate the project’s completion in front of the brightly colored, Junkanoo-inspired Goombay Cultural Center. The event included remarks from the line’s leadership team, Prime Minister Philip Davis, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Chester Cooper, and Minister of Works and Member of Parliament for Central and South Eleuthera Clay Sweeting.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the opening of Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point with the Bahamian community,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line. “The creation of our second island destination in the Bahamas has been an incredible collaboration. We are proud of the relationships we have built with the community here and the unique stories we are telling together. We look forward to welcoming our first guests to the island, where they will experience the spirit of the Bahamas and the special magic of Disney.”
Guests also enjoyed performances by local Junkanoos, including the winning teams from this year’s Youth Junkanoo competition from Tarpum Bay Elementary School and Preston H. Albury High School on Eleuthera.
The new development has created hundreds of construction-related jobs for Bahamians, more than three times the number of jobs Disney promised before the project began. The project will be run by an all-Bahamian leadership team and has created nearly 200 high-quality jobs for Bahamians.
“Disney’s collaboration with the Bahamian creative community has brought a truly unique cultural experience to South Eleuthera,” said renowned Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts. “Visitors and locals alike will be inspired and entertained by the moving stories shared by local musicians, artisans and storytellers. I’m proud to be a part of this vision and believe that Disney’s commitment to fostering cultural understanding and appreciation will leave a lasting impact on all who visit Disney’s Lookout Caye.”
To celebrate the opening of Lookout Island, Disney will invest $1 million to support youth programming, school playground renovations and community athletic spaces, in addition to other initiatives to support community needs. This investment also includes Disney Conservation Fund support for youth conservation education in Central and South Eleuthera.
