I had a great time in this charming and luxurious seaport and love sharing tips. So, read on for this one-day itinerary that covers the highlights of a walking tour of Portofino Italy.
In the Liguria region Italian Riviera, Portofino Located on the Gulf of Tigullio near Genoa. This charming fishing village is also a holiday destination for the rich and famous. Portofino’s harbor is filled with luxury yachts and lined with colorful buildings. In addition, it is sheltered by the verdant Portofino Mountains.
The village is located within the Portofino Regional National Park and Marine Reserve. The cobbled roads and alleys are filled with quaint shops, upscale boutiques, restaurants and cafes. In addition, the signature dish of the Liguria region is pesto, a sauce made with basil, pine nuts, garlic and Pecorino cheese.
Portofino is a village surrounded by natural beauty, historical landmarks, shopping and restaurants all within walking distance. The best way to spend a day in Portofino is on a hiking tour. Here are the highlights along the way.
La Piazzetta
The best starting point for a day trip to Portofino is the main square, La Piazzetta, which is situated on the picturesque port and features colorful buildings. From here you can walk to many popular attractions, such as Portofino Marina, the Church of San Martino, Castello Bran, the park museum, shopping and restaurants. All of these attractions are within a 5-10 minute walk.
Portofino Marina
This marina is where luxury yachts anchor during their stay in Portofino. The lifestyle of the rich and famous is amazing. Also, ferries and fishing boats come here. I took a dinghy from the anchored cruise ship to this ocean paradise.
Park Museum
The entrance to this unique sculpture park is next to the Marina del Portofino sign. The entrance is close to the Marina sign and leads to the Museo del Parco or Park Museum. This park was created in the 80s and is located on a terrace under a cliff. The park displays exotic plants and sculptures from over 100 different artists. Sadly I missed this park as it was closed when I visited.

Church of San Martino
this Church of San Martino Dating back to 11day 1st century, it is the symbol of Portofino. Its bell tower, along with other colorful buildings, dominates the skyline of La Piazzetta. From the main square, walk to the right between the buildings and up the steps to the entrance. The church has a 3-nave design and a rose window on the front. It is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours and admission is free.
Stroll along the pedestrian street for shopping and dining
The streets are lined with clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, designer jewelry and restaurants. Antica SatoriaIf you take your time, there is something for everyone in Portofino.
There are many restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating in front of the port, which is very lively. However, I walked along a narrow alley and came to the quaint and quiet Ubarti Restaurants In a small square. Here I had the opportunity to taste the signature dish of the Liguria region – pesto on pasta. Bon appetit!
Walk up the hill to St. George’s Church, Bran Castle, and the lighthouse
A beautiful path takes you up the hill to the Church of St. George, the Brown Castle and the lighthouse. The hill is steep with occasional shade from trees. This path is popular for easy reasons. Not only are the 3 stops fun, but they offer the most amazing views of Portofino Harbour and the city centre. Overall, it’s about a 10 minute walk up the hill between each stop.
St. George’s Church
The first stop is St. George’s Churchdedicated to St. George, the patron saint of Portofino.
Inside are relics of St. George brought back by sailors returning from the Crusades. This Roman Catholic church was destroyed and rebuilt after World War II. There is also an interesting cemetery behind this yellow church.
From here, the views of Portofino Harbour are fantastic, but keep climbing because the best views are at Castello Brown.
Brown Castle

The castle is surrounded by beautiful Mediterranean gardens and offers the most spectacular views of the Portofino port. In addition, the castle displays bas-reliefs and furniture made in marble or slate. It was named after its first private owner, Montagu Yeats Brown, the British Consul in Genoa from 1867 to 1905. In general, the history of this fortress is closely linked to the military defense of the Portofino port, which has been in existence since the 15th century.day century.
Portofino Lighthouse or Faro di Portofino
Just a 10-minute walk from Castello Brown is Portofino LighthouseThis white lighthouse is located on a sea cliff, 130 feet above sea level. It is located on the western tip of the Portofino Peninsula and offers stunning views of the Gulf of Tigullio. There is also a cafe at the base of the lighthouse with stunning views of the sea below.
Baia Cannonne Beach
This small bay has the Baia Cannone beach It is just a short walk from the town centre. The hillsides around the beach are dotted with trees and villas, such as the famous Villa Mondadori. The beach has crystal clear waters and yachts are moored in front of the beach.

Christ of the Abyss The statue lies 17 meters (56 feet) underwater. Its purpose is to protect divers and fishermen and represents the blessing of Christ. The statue was sculpted by Guido Galletti in 1954 and is an interesting attraction for divers to explore.
Portofino Regional Natural Park Located in the heart of the Ligurian coast. The park features sea cliffs and hiking trails with views of Marine protected areas Overall, the park is home to 900 species of plants, a variety of animals and 80 km of walking trails.
These walking trails are well maintained and signposted to suit all fitness levels. In addition, the park is home to a number of historic buildings, such as Saracen Tower, Monastery of San Frutuosoancient water mills and WWII coastal batteries. Of note is the path to San Fruttuoso (also known as the “via dei tubi”), a popular tubing trail.
